Master studies

Study programme: Chemistry and Technology

Sub - programme: Chemistry of Materials

The programme has been designed to continue the education of graduates of Bachelor degree studies oriented towards materials sciences. The general knowledge gained at the Bachelor level is extended and deepened in courses focused mainly on physical chemistry of materials, materials engineering and materials technologies. Students may concentrate on individual groups of material by a proper choice of optional courses. Substantial part of studies is devoted to laboratory projects aimed at further development of students' capabilities of a self-reliant solution of research, design and technological problems.

Subject S107006Glass Technology (Guarantor: Prof. Lubomír Němec, Assoc.Prof. Jaroslav Kloužek)

Annotation:

The course involves the fundamental chemical-engineering and technological knowledge of glass preparation, particularly by glass melting. The contemporary approaches to preparation of special glasses by modern non-melting methods are summarized in the introductory lecture. The substantial part of the course focuses on the glass melting process of industrial glasses. The individual courses are chronologically arranged according to the actual development of the glass melting process.

 Sylabus:

1. Glass raw materials and their treatment, chemical reactions in glass batch
2. Particle dissolution in the glass melt
3. Bubble removal from glass melts, gas solubilities and bubble nucleation in glass melts
4. Oxidation-reduction equilibria in glass melts
5. Dissolution of chemical inhohogeneities (cords)
6. Character of glass flow in glass melting furnaces
7. Energy consumption and melting performance of the melting space
8. The evaporation of volatile glass components during melting
9. Corrosion of refractory materials and heating electrodes by glass melts
10. Glass forming processes
11. Glass annealing
12. Coloured glasses
13. Special glasses
14. Coatings on glass
